The Reality is Changing
Breast cancer is not a one-size-fits-all experience and the gaps in care are growing.
- Breast cancer in women under 40 is rising
- Women in rural areas, and under 40, experience the highest rates of later-stage diagnoses
- Women under 40 have the highest rates of triple-negative breast cancer, especially African American women
- Women under 40 are more likely to be diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer
- Rural counties have the highest mortality rates
Screening Guidelines Have Changed
This information could make a real difference.
- Screening mammograms are now recommended starting at age 40 for average-risk women
- Annual mammograms are available and encouraged
- If you have dense breast tissue, you can request a 3D mammogram for more accurate screening
- Screening rates in Oregon and Washington have dropped by 11% — early detection saves lives
